According to The Great American Hot Dog Book: Recipes and Side Dishes from Across America, the name "hot dog" came from a cartoonist and sports journalist from the New York Evening Journal named Tad Dorgan. In 1901, Tad Dorgan attended a baseball game in New York. While sitting in the stands, he saw a man selling hot dog burgers shouting, "They're red hot! Get your sausages while they're red hot!". But for some reason, when he saw sausage sandwiches, he immediately thought of the Dachshund - a small dog in Germany with short legs and long body like sausages.
